Olga Romero Biography

Olga Portillo Romero was born in Seville in 1980. At very young age she already showed a vital interest in anything related to theatre and folksongs. Listening to music on TV or radio always caught her complete attention and she used to be lost in thoughts while listening. When Olga went for a walk to the city with her family her parents had to hold her off singing with any street performer she saw. On the river ferry there used to play an orchestra to entertain the passengers during the ride and she always longed for the stage to join the ensemble. The pianist was a singing teacher and suggested Olga’s parents to take her to his academy. She was only three years old; hence too small to enter the institution.

However, a year later she met the same ensemble again during a christening and immediately joined them singing. At this point her musical formation began. Her mother had to enrol her at the school of the pianist, the master Yllescas. She stayed at his academy for years to the age of eight, and then she entered the Seville Superior Conservatory as well as the school of Carmen Noble for folksingers. When she was eleven she changed her singing teacher and learned from Adelita Domingo. At this point she had to choose an instrument and decided for the piano. When she was 19 she had already gained lots of experience: Eleven years at the Conservatory, 15 years of education in folk singing, shows at the Seville fair and many other Andalusian cities, performing at various theatres, autonomous TV programmes, clubs and discotheques. Further she acted in shows presented by Adelita throughout Spain.

Olga Romero

After all Olga arrived in Madrid. Here she worked as a pianist and singer in various establishments. During a period at a mega-orchestra she learned a lot about harmonics. Moreover she started presenting galas, made reportages, studied interpretation and later she received several small parts in TV series and a more significant one in a movie. In 2002 she had the chance to present her skills to a larger audience when she participated in the TV contest “Popstars” which also gave her the opportunity to produce a single with Warner. Moreover she performed in musicals such as “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Grease” and “Dirty Dancing”. She was also starring “Hoy no puedo levantar”.

In 2000 she founded a band with a couple of friends with whom she started performing at various festivals throughout Spain. The number of her engagements rose steadily. However she never forgot her flamenco. Instead Olga always kept in mind that in the end hard work pays off. This is what makes her such successful flamenco performer.
